Camiguin Island, The Island Born of fire, the land of the sweetest lansones and yummy pastel, is located in the Northern Mindanao Region and formerly a part of Misamis Oriental. Camiguin is the second smallest province in the Philippines both in population and land area after Batanes and Mambajao is its capital and its largest municipality in both area and population.

Camiguin Island |
The island is called the "Island Born of Fire" because it is said that it was created by volcanic eruptions and land movements.
How to get here:
We went to Agora Bus Terminal in Cagayan De Oro, from there, we rode a van that will take us to Balingoan Pier. Travel time from Agora Bus Terminal to Balingoan Pier is around 1.5 to 2 hours. Since we traveled very early, it only took us exactly 1.5 hours. From Balingoan Pier its a 1-hour RoRo ride to Port of Benoni in Camiguin. First trip is at 0500H and costs PHP170.00 each. From there, we met our driver/ tour guide for our day trip in Camiguin Island.

Places to visit:
- Katibawasan Falls
Located 5KM southeast of Mambajao, the Katibawasan Falls cascades 250ft down to a pool surrounded by orchids and ferns. Its ice cold water makes it ideal for a summer getaway. You have to pay a minimum fee, a small eatery and souvenir shops are available outside.
- White Island
Situated off the coast of Mambajao, northwest of mainland Camiguin, is the uninhabited White Island that boosts white sandbar with emerald and blue water and Mt. Hibok Hibok and Mt. Vulcan as a backdrop.
Small boats that could fit up to 6 persons can take you to White Island for a short 10-15 minute ride for a fee of PHP400.00 per boat. They also offer goggles and life vest for snorkeling in the island for PHP100.00 each.
I must say that you haven't visited Camiguin if you haven't been to White Island.

White Island and Mt. Hibok Hibok |
- Ardent Hibok Hibok Hotspring Resort
The hot spring resort is naturally heated by Mt. Hibok Hibok, an active volcano in the country. It is located at the foot of Mt. Hibok Hibok and this natural hotspring can reach up to 40 degrees in terms of water temperature. Ardent Hibok- Hibok Hotspring Resort has a total of 6 pools, separated by tiers or layers, each has different temperatures, hot to hottest, your call.
There are accommodations for overnight stay and cottages for day tour. In our case, we didn't rent a cottage since there's only few guests and we only stayed for less than an hour. So we only put our bags anywhere we could see them.
- Bohol Sea and Mt. Vulcan
- Old Catarman (Gui-ob) Church Ruins
The church is one of the oldest and most unique structure in Camiguin located in Brgy. Bonbon, Catarman and was built around the 16th century. It was ruined by the explosion of Mt. Vulcan in the 1871. The only left is the bell tower and the church ruins.
- Sunken Cemetery
The Sunken Cemetery, for me is what Camiguin is really known for. This is the cross that mark the cemetery that was swept by the volcanic birth of Mt. Vulcan that led to the sinking of the town's cemetery at below sea level.
- Soda Swimming Pool
Yes, you can do Camiguin tour for a day, but I must say that its not enough. In our case, I felt like we're contestants in The Amazing Race. We arrived in Camiguin Island and started the tour a little before 0700H. We only stayed in each destination for a few minutes, the longest maybe is an hour in White Island and Sto.Nino Cold Spring Resort. We wanted to stay long but we cannot since the distance from one destination to another is really far and we have to catch the last trip of the barge/ RoRo back to Cagayan De Oro at 1615H, and we almost miss it. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the tour. Knowing someone from Camiguin made the place into my travel bucket list, but, being located in Mindanao area, I never thought that I could set foot in this Island this soon.
